Melody

My journey through life until my first yoga class seemed to be leading me to exactly this place.
I had been involved in the beauty industry for many years, dealing very much with the external beauty of people, which changes with the passing of time and ones experiences through life.

I felt the need to journey inwardly as life and circumstances changed in & around me. I needed to find the beauty and stillness in my heart - not in my outward appearance.

The leading influences on my yoga path has been my best friend and husband Bernie, with his beacon of light and love that has constantly shone down upon me - his endless support, love and patience. He has allowed me to grow and unfold; and whenever I fell he picked me up.
Kerry [Haum of Yoga] took us to places in our minds and bodies we never thought possible.
David Jacobs [Iyengar yoga] for his fountain of knowledge.
Rob Nairn who led me inside my mind and challenged me to question my thoughts.
Mark Joseph [Still Minds] for our endless conversations.
My parents’ Allan and Betty Clarke, and my two children Tanya and Juan Paul who continue to teach me lessons
Also to all my many local and international teachers who inspire me when I lose my way.
And last but not least, all my yoga students who through their enthusiasm and support inspire me to get on my mat.

Thank you all I am blessed to know each and every one of you.

Yoga is my passion. I qualified as a teacher in 2007 and at the same time became an internationally certified Yoga Alliance Teacher RYT200 [one of thirty-seven in South Africa]. I am also a registered teacher with the YTF [yoga teacher’s fellowship] - one of six registered in KZN
I am privileged to share this amazing knowledge with others, and I love how it has such power to change bodies and lives.

The focus of my yoga teaching is to bring people into closer awareness of whom and what they really are through awareness of breath.
Breath is such a powerful tool for connecting to self. For most people finding that true self is so difficult, because of all the distractions and stresses of everyday life. It’s only when we spend that hour on the mat moving our bodies and actually listening, and truly listening to our breath that we start to still the mind and connect to our inner world. This brings inner strength to face the many challenges life sends our way, OFF THE MAT.

Bernard

Bernie has been a voracious reader all his life. Trying to find answers to his questions about the meaning of life, which resulted in still more questions. He still finds time to read avidly & can have up to 10 books he is reading at the same time, depending on his mood or the day! His “search” began during the early nineties & culminated in him attending many retreats in quiet meditation over the last 6 years, which has also provided much insight into the subject of the mind. This has also brought a level of calmness, and given him a new sense of purpose and direction. On retreat, he has been able to spend time with great teachers who have instructed him in the practice of meditation & study of the psychology of meditation. This also resulted in a need to share & help others in their quest for answers or meaning; Bernie calls them his spiritual friends. Study of the mind came easily to him with his scientific background, but he soon discovered that linear thinking has no place in his spiritual path.

At Karma Yoga Centre over the last 18 months, he has helped students to explore layers of their minds and so open up a new perspective on the world. Bernie offers guided meditations of the many types, & also offers Q&A sessions & teachings on topics of the mind. He also uses CDs & videos to provide a more complete understanding. During the quarterly retreats to be held at Karma Yoga Centre with invited teachers, time has been set aside to deeply explore meditation techniques. Mindfulness training also goes a long way to helping him & his students to focus appropriately on this wonderful journey of the mind.

Diego Baldi

Diego Baldi was born in 1988 and since early on in his life has pursued an active lifestyle. Over the years he has been interested in various dance and movement forms, such as Latin American and Ballroom where he danced competitively. Break-dancing [self-taught] where he went on to perform in public at shows, as well as teach these dance styles.

He also learnt Capoeira, the Brazilian non-contact martial art in Cape Town where he attended numerous workshops by Mestres from Brazil.
His introduction to yoga was seeded by joining in on classes which his sister Bianca attended and later taught here on the South Coast. This introduction was based on a YYI (Iyengar) yoga form, which focuses on alignment and balance.
Whilst living in Cape Town, Diego also took the Art of Living course, and it was here that Diego was introduced to Kriya yoga and later Kundalini yoga which he now teaches down the Kwa Zulu Natal Coast and at Karma Yoga Centre.

Diego draws on all these various movement forms as a source for understanding the body; however Diego is clear that Yoga is the form that is able to extend beyond the physical and offer a holistic approach. Diego's yoga role models include BKS Iyengar and Yogi Bhajan.

Sally - Anne Anthony

Some of my earliest & fondest childhood memories are from attending yoga classes with my mom around the age of 3 or 4 years old. The teacher was a dear old lady 89 years old called Claire
I started my own yoga journey back in 1999 & have practised yoga ever since then, with many teachers & different styles
David Jacobs was one of my first teachers down in Camps Bay & I managed to attend a more recent workshop of his in Durban in May 2009
Then I attended a workshop with Coco van Oppens in November 2009 entitled “Teaching Children Yoga”
Finally, my qualifying studies were at Zen Yoga Studio in Durban where I obtained my certificate in May 2010 from Tracy Irwin.
Karma Yoga Centre now provides me with an opportunity to share this experience with students and a place to continue my regular practice as I continue to grow as a yogi. Besides yoga providing me with a sound Body, Mind & Spirit, it has given me all the tools to living my truth.
Yoga is my life!

General

Besides the many week end and 10-day retreats and courses they have attended around South Africa, both Bernard and Melody have been to India and Tibet a number of times on pilgrimage to expand their knowledge even further. They continue their annual visits to their teachers to stay connected & current. The two of them are grateful to have found each other, which has enabled them to share their dream of opening the Karma Yoga Centre to benefit others and to provide a sanctuary to further their own practice.

Invited teachers from around South Africa also provide an opportunity to reconnect with each other & also provide local students the chance to interact with new teachers & techniques.

The body brings us closer to the mind, and the mind brings us closer to Consciousness; this brings all beings closer together.
